Backup & Recovery – What about my SaaS data?

This subject is very interesting to me as it causes controversy. Cloud and SaaS providers will try and provide tools for you to protect your data and they claim to have Disaster Recovery covered but do they? Schedule a call with Gartner or any other paid IT information service and they will tell you, backup your data separately! Salesforce last year (2020) came out and said they were eliminating their recovery service, only to reverse course this year (2021) and bring it back, even better than it was. When you talk to Microsoft about Backup and Recovery, they’ll tell you that hardly any of their O365 customers are doing it. So what gives? Who do you believe? Here is my approach. If you can add the capability to your existing toolset and it’s not too much cost, go ahead and do it. At least pilot it and kick the tires. If the cost is substantial, do your research first. Do you have a requirement to go further? Are you publicly traded? Compliance requirements? I typically error on the side of caution with these types of decisions but only if the worse case scenario is too much risk. You also need to look at each application separately and their importance to your organization. Hoping this helps as always.
